Beside the facade creation as such, an important role by the optical creation of the exterior has also the cladding of the existing columns. Here a classical column is divided into three main parts. The capital forms the upper end of a column or the column head, while the lower end of a column is called a base or column foot. These both column elements surround usually the statically necessary part of a column, the column shaft (in most case in reinforced concrete).

These both elements of the column cladding are fastened at two half shells on the upper and bottom end of the leveled column. The Base – Column Cladding for the Column Foot

To help the bottom of an existing column to become a beautifully designed end, a suitable column base is often applied in the form of two half shells. Usually this base consists of two round beads, which are interrupted by a hollow trowel lying in between. A square final plate forms in most cases a level plane with ground, but this can however be omitted.
